Celebrity Week

At Alerces we have a special tradition inspired by teaching the Reggio Emilia method. Within this philosophy of teaching it is important to recognize the role that families have in their child’s education and that, led by the child, all of us contribute to guiding their educational journey.

The Parent’s Role in Education

To nurture the role of the parent we created a very special week to celebrate and honour each child called Celebrity Week. Parents can choose the week during the school year that they would like to have as their child’s Celebrity Week. Some parents choose to match the Celebrity Week with their child’s birthday.

What is Celebrity Week?

Celebrity week is one week during the school year where your child gets to be the “celebrity”. Together with your child, you will plan and share with the class some activities that your child loves.

We encourage you to share your own interests and passions to facilitate experiences for your child’s Celebrity Week. You do not have to organize an activity for every day of the week but rather one or two days. Generally, parents who choose the Celebrity Week over their child’s birthday will have one day that is a birthday celebration and one day that has an activity specifically for their child’s Celebrity week.

First Day of Celebrity Week

Your child will help to kick off their Celebrity Week by preparing for the first day with your help. On the first morning of their Celebrity week, your child will introduce themselves to the other children. They’ll run down the red carpet and stand on stage with a microphone to talk about themselves and their family, pets and interests. You can help your child prepare for this by making a collage of photos on a sheet of bristle board to help guide their introduction. Kids and parents often choose to put photos of their child with other family members, pets and doing things they love or eating their favourite foods. This is an early introduction to public speaking.

Your child will have the experience to walk our “red” carpet (a green one but the sentiment is the same), speak into a microphone and even practice their Spanish. Following your child’s introduction the other children can ask questions like the name of a pet or grandparent, and your child can select the children to answer. You can choose your activity and let us know your plans for the week so we can adjust our curriculum to include your activity.
